The dynamic between the two changed from that point on. Young no longer shied away from his companion, no longer avoided contact. If he had been honest with himself, he would have admitted that he was doing what he could to encourage contact. When they rode on the bus, Young would find a cramped corner so they would be smashed in together. To get his comp’s attention, he would bump shoulders or squeeze Christensen’s biceps instead of just saying his name.
When they knelt for their evening prayers together, sometimes they’d kneel together at one bed, thigh to thigh. One night Young lingered at Christensen’s bedside, their legs touching, unsure of what he expected to happen. He told himself he was waiting for the Spirit to enter him, to guide him. That’s all he was doing with his companion, bonding together for a similar purpose. He told himself that even Joseph Smith himself said that it was “pleasing for friends to lie down together, locked in the arms of love, to sleep and wake in each other’s embrace.” That didn’t help him define their relationship in a “godly” manner, his face hot as he quickly got into his bed and switched off his bedside lamp.
“‘Night.”
“Good night, Austin.”
His eyes closed at the use of his name instead of the formal and expected “Elder.” Strange that his own name could sound so intimate. Why was he thinking about this? Why couldn’t he just be satisfied with the life mapped out for him by his parents and the Church? His breathing was shallow; he forced himself to take a deep breath and let it out. Some half-formed thought kept darting to the surface of his conscience, but would slip away again before he could grab it and throttle it to death.
He woke after a few hours of fitful sleep to a painful erection. He couldn’t think of a single hymn, a single scripture to drive away the carnal thoughts filling his mind. The room was dark, but an outside light gave just enough light for him to make out Christensen’s face a few feet away; he looked to be sound asleep. He let out a shaky breath and slipped his hand under his pajama bottoms and cupped himself through the silky fabric of his garments, unable to bring himself to knowingly touch his actual flesh, and do it with his companion in the same room.
Christensen shifted in his bed, throwing one arm up over his head. Austin’s heartbeat skipped a few beats, but Christensen just moved in his sleep, that was all.
The pads of his fingertips slid over the satin fabric with jerky, tentative movements. He wasn’t sure what to do. He held himself in the palm of his hand, the garments making a protective barrier from his flesh being physically touched, curling up on his side to hide his body’s movements in case Christensen woke up. He kept his eyes on Brandon’s sleeping face and continued slowly stroking himself over the slippery fabric. His companion slept with his mouth slightly parted. Young’s eyes had adjusted to the dark and he noticed every feature on his companion’s face, the curve of his full lower lip, the way his earlobe just barely hung down, the long, dark eyelashes resting on his cheek.
He let out a tiny sigh and slid his hand through the opening in the front of his garments and touched himself fully. Christensen slept only in his garments; he didn’t wear pajamas over them, and his blankets had shifted, exposing his shoulders and chest. Austin’s hand moved faster, his other hand slipping under his sac to hold it through the silky fabric. He bit his lower lip as the unfamiliar sensation of sexual gratification built inside him. He could see the hairs on Brandon’s chest through the thin, flimsy material of his g’s, make out the small, dark circle of his nipple.
An unstoppable pressure was building up deep inside him; he bucked into his loosened fist and looked back into Brandon’s sleeping face, except Brandon wasn’t sleeping anymore.

“I was beginning to think you were a machine, or something.”
“W-what?”
“I don’t know, just, you never did that before, and I thought that was kinda crazy.”
Austin reached out quickly and grabbed a few tissues to clean himself up.
“Are you okay? I didn’t mean to embarrass you or anything. Don’t you have older brothers?”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Brandon sat up, propping himself up with one hand. “Are you telling me that you’ve never busted in on one of your brothers, or been woken up by that?”
“Absolutely not! We don’t- I mean, you’re not supposed to-“ Austin groaned and threw an arm over his face. He kept his face covered when he heard bed springs creak, signaling that his comp was getting out of bed. A weight settled next to his hip, shifting his body.
“Austin.”
He sighed in exasperation and humiliation, “What?”
“Austin. It’s not a big deal.”
“Can we not talk about this? Can we just go to bed?”
Every nerve in his body tingled as Brandon laid a hand on his hip, his thumb casually resting on the crease between thigh and hip.
“Austin, it’s not a big deal. Really. It’s not to me, I mean. I don’t mind.”
Austin slid his arm up to his forehead so he could see. Brandon’s face was concerned, but there was something else there. He told himself it was just sleep, his companion looked sleepy, is all. Something in that look made Austin’s insides twist and writhe.
“But we’re not supposed . . .” he trailed off weakly. Brandon’s thumb was making small circles on his hip bone.
“Yeah, well it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, right?” Brandon shifted closer, moving his leg to rest against Austin’s arm. Silk and leg hair brushed along the backs of Austin’s fingers. He moved his hand in the tiniest of motions to feel the dichotomy of the two more fully, pinching his fingers together to trap a few of the hairs from Brandon’s thigh.
“You know I do it, don’t you.” It was a statement, not a question. “You can’t help it. I can’t help it, that is. I didn’t have this problem before.”
Austin’s head was in a fog. Brandon was leaning closer, his fingers made small circles into the thick muscle of Austin’s backside. He tried to form a coherent thought. “Before what?”
“Well,“ he paused, a sheepish grin on his face, “before you.” Brandon’s hand came to rest on his knee, mere centimeters from Austin’s hand, still lightly caressing Brandon’s thigh. “You’re like me, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I-. Well, not really. You’re better than I’ll ever be.”
“How can you say that? I’ve just . . . I’ve been thinking about it longer. I had a problem before I left for my mission. Problem,” Brandon snorted. ”That’s what my bishop called it. And he was the one that I -.”
Brandon hung his head and sighed, “Never mind,” and leaned forward to stand up. Austin shot his hand out and grabbed Brandon’s, pulling him back down and was pleased when Brandon shifted to lean against Austin’s bent leg.
“What happened?”
Brandon picked at the edge of Austin’s bed sheet. “We got close, to put it simply. Said that he was sorry, that we didn’t need to have a court since nothing really happened beyond us becoming ‘closer brethren.’” He looked deeply into Austin’s face. “Did you know that men were sealed to other men in the early days of the church? That men were able to express their love for other men back then? My bishop, the one I got ‘close’ to? He’s the one that helped me understand what that meant.”
A huge weight was lifting off Austin’s chest even as his heart rate jumped to an alarming speed. He thought he was the only one that had wondered about that, had wondered if it meant what he had never been able to let himself imagine. “I -. Yeah. I did. But I didn’t think it was so they could . . .” He couldn’t look in Brandon’s face and finish that sentence.
“Sometimes. Not for all of them, but for some of them. My great-great grand uncle was sealed to Joseph Smith, actually. Like a wife. He never married a woman.”
Austin’s heart was racing. He felt that they were both on the edge of a huge crevasse, trying to knit together a safety net from the gospel they’d studied so fervently and invested their lives. He shifted so he was sitting up more, resting an arm on his knee, his hand brushing the edge of Brandon’s garment on his upper arm. Brandon began to worry a new place on Austin’s bed sheet, a place closer to Austin’s waist.
Brandon exhaled softly, “It’s in the Bible, you know. ‘The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David.’”
Austin closed his eyes, confused. Everything he’d ever been taught told him that what was happening was wrong. A warm hand on his leg a moment later broke through the chaos and made everything clear; he could see the page in 1 Samuel as if it was lying there in front of him.
He opened his eyes. He reached out and took Brandon’s hand in his, finally daring to look into his companion’s face. Brandon brought their foreheads together, running his hand through Austin’s closely-cropped hair.
Austin barely breathed, “It can’t be wrong, not when it feels like this. Even Joseph -”
Brandon rest his lips on the edge of Austin’s mouth and whispered, “‘Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him.’”
He held Brandon’s face in his hands, his thumbs tracing the hard edge of Brandon’s jawline. His voice was quiet, choked with emotion, “‘And David arose, bowed three times and they kissed one another.’”
Their lips met in a chaste kiss. They held each other, mouths lightly touching. Brandon ran his hands up the silky fabric to hold Austin’s body more fully against his. Austin exhaled sharply from his nose and pulled Brandon’s face to his forcibly, their mouths clashing together and hands grabbing each other into a tight embrace. He slanted his head, his tongue finding Brandon’s. Brandon slid his hands down his back, grabbed the hem of his pajama top and garments in an attempt to pull them up and over. Austin stopped him by leaning back.
“I can’t. It’s just . . . I can’t take them off yet. But here -” He pulled his pajama top off, feeling naked in his garments, nonetheless. Brandon reached for him, cupping the back of Austin’s head and drawing him back to his mouth for a more languid kiss.
“It’s okay,” Brandon breathed.
Austin had never felt more whole and more afraid in his life. Brandon’s hands slid under the silky fabric, “Just to feel you against me,” he moaned. They positioned themselves on the narrow twin bed so that they wouldn’t crush each other.
“Can you just take the bottoms off? Not your G’s, just the other?” Brandon whispered into his ear. Brandon teeth dragged lightly over Austin’s ear lobe, sending shudders down his body.
He reached down and tugged the elastic waist pajamas down, Brandon assisting by kicking them off Austin’s feet and to the floor. The white of their garments stood out in the dark as if they were illuminated. Brandon’s hand slid over Austin’s hip bone and grazed the edge of Austin’s cock. A roaring built in his ears as he heard Brandon make the same quiet noises he’d heard so many times in the middle of the night. He could hear a rhythmic gasp growing louder and louder, and as a giant pressure inside him found release for the second time that night, he realized that he had been the one gasping.
Brandon looked at him seriously, “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh.” Brandon looked pointedly at their crotches and then broke into laughter, Austin joining him before a look of panicked fear crossed his face.
“Okay, I think that may have crossed a line.”
Their laughter subsided quickly. They continued to lie together, Brandon making good use of their close proximity to trail kisses and soft bites down Austin’s neck.
“Transfers are in two weeks.”
Everything came to a standstill. Austin turned sharply to check Brandon’s face for any hint of a joke. “Do you know if we’re being split up?”
Brandon kissed him softly on the lips. “I don’t know. After all this . . . They usually don’t move people around here too much, so I’m hoping not.”
Austin fought the panic back. Transfers meant interviews with their leaders. Interviews meant questions that probed into private matters between companions. He was still struggling to make sense of what had just happened, whether he wanted it to happen again, or if he wanted to repent and act as if nothing had happened.
Brandon rolled to his side, pulling Austin up against him. The intimacy shocked him at first, giving way to warmth and a sense of peace flooding him. The two lay together in silence until finally drifting off to sleep. He decided. He wanted it to happen again.
